Six fresh skin samples were examined from different groups. The study showed that after 4 weeks of daily ingestion, Bovine Hydrolysed Collagen resulted in a significant increase of type 1 & 4 collagen synthesis in skin (up to FOURFOLD). Skin fibroblasts were also shown to increase in volume and activity. Fibroblast cell cultures showed a high percentage of cells in the S phase than the control cells and decreased percentage of cells in apoptosis compared with controls. Also, after 4 weeks of CH ingestion significantly decreased MMP2 activity was noted compared with the other 2 groups. (These are cells that degrade skin collagen, cause skin ageing & wrinkles). The study conclusion states: Our findings indicated a stimulatory effect of bovine hydrolysed collagen on skin metabolism. Bovine hydrolysed collagen ingestion reduced MMP2 activity and increased expression of types I and IV collagens. Thus, this can be used as a potential candidate for reducing aging related changes of extracellular matrix by stimulating anabolic processes in skin tissue.

Key benefits

Hydrolysed collagen or hydrolysed gelatin is a special type of gelatin with a much lower molecular weight (MW)

Enzymatic hydrolysis process yields short-chained peptides having a low mean MW of approximately 3 kilodaltons (kDa) (mean chain length of 25 – 30 amino acids)

Offers excellent solubility – 95% absorption

Amino-acid composition of the peptides resembles that of collagen in human articular (joint) cartilage

High content of the amino acids hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine as is characteristic of collagen. The predominant amino acids in Arthred™ hydrolysed collagen – glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, lysine, and hydroxylysine

Hyaluronic Acid

Researchers at Toho University have found ingested Hyaluronic Acid supplementation to be directly correlated to measured increases in skin moisture, increased skin smoothness, and amelioration of wrinkles. A double-blind study was conducted wherein 35 subjects ages 30-60, who frequently suffer from dry, rough skin were given either a dietary hyaluronic acid supplement with the same patented process as ours, or a placebo over a 4-week period. The results showed that the group who had ingested Hyaluronic Acid had a significant increase in skin moisture. Microscopic skin surface analysis also showed an increase in skin smoothness and lessening of wrinkles.

Dosage for above HA study was 120mg per day for 4 weeks (low level dose). Our dosage for Totally Derma is 210mg per day. There is another placebo-control double-blind study which shows 240mg per day over a 6-week period with 22 individuals shows improvements in dryness, itchiness, redness, damage due to cosmetics, erosion and exfoliation. Microscopic, 3-dimensional skin surface analysis also showed improvement in skin smoothness.

Dietary Hyaluronic acid, with the same patented process as Synovoderma® is shown to significantly increase skin moisture, skin smoothness and reduce wrinkles within 4 weeks.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study shows oral intake of animal sourced Hydrolysed Collagen reduces skin wrinkles and has positive effects on dermal matrix synthesis. 114 woman aged 45-65 years were given Hydrolysed Collagen (animal sourced) or placebo once daily for 8 weeks. Skin wrinkles were objectively measured in all subjects, before starting the treatment, after 4 and 8 weeks as well as 4 weeks after the last intake (4-week regression phase). A subgroup was established for suction blister biopsies analysing procollagen I, elastin and fibrillin at the beginning of the treatment and after 8 weeks of intake. After 8 weeks the Hydrolysed Collagen group had a significantly reduced eye wrinkle volume varying between 20-49.9%. Pro-collagen type I content was also increased by 65% and elastin by 18%. Moreover, a positive long-lasting effect was observed 4 weeks after the last Hydrolysed Collagen administration.

Key benefits

Hydrates the skin

Increases volume and density

Supports collagen and elastin

Lowest molecular weight (50kDa)

95% absorption

Vitamin C

260 mg

Vitamin C is an essential component in the body’s production of collagen as it stimulates fibroblasts and converts proline to hydroxyproline. Vitamin C is scientifically shown to help maintain firm and youthful skin by combating collagen degradation and oxidative stress (it helps to repair aging and photo-damaged skin).

Key benefits

Stimulates fibroblasts

Converts proline to hydroxyproline

Maintains firm and youthful skin

Combats collagen degradation

Combats oxidative stress

Repairs ageing and photo-damaged skin

Grape Seed Extract

160 mg

Grape Seed Extract is a very powerful antioxidant. It bonds to collagen and negates free radicals, boosts collagen development and helps in the renewal of skin cells. Grape Seed extract helps skin stay firm, supple and moisturized. Procyanidins found in Grape Seed Extract are also shown to protect and repair the skin from sun damage.

Key benefits

Negates free radicals

Boosts collagen development

Renews skin cells

Helps skin stay firm, supple and moisturised

Protects and repairs the skin from sun damage

Green Tea Extract

160 mg

Green Tea Extract is naturally rich in antioxidants and is associated with multiple skin benefits. It protects skin from the damaging effects of free radicals and also stimulates the skins microcirculation. It is a good anti-inflammatory for skin and most importantly inhibits collagenase (a natural enzyme that breaks down collagen). Numerous clinical studies show Green Tea Extract increases skin firmness, water content and elasticity.

Key benefits

Protects skin from free radicals

Stimulates microcirculation

Is an anti-inflammatory

Inhibits enzymes that break down collagen

Increases skin firmness, water content and elasticity

Alpha Lipoic Acid

60 mg

Alpha Lipoic Acid is one of the MOST powerful antioxidants. Studies show it can slow down the aging process of the body in general. Within the skin it reverses skin cell damage and is shown to improve fine lines and wrinkles. Alpha Lipoic Acid regenerates Vit C, Vit E and inhibits cross-linking which contributes to the formation of wrinkles.

Key benefits

Regenerates Vitamin C, Vitamin E

Improves fine lines and wrinkles

Reverses skin cell damage

Inhibits cross-linking which contributes to the formulation of wrinkles

Zinc

5 mg

Zinc is an essential mineral for maintaining healthy, youthful skin. Zinc is well known for its properties in repairing UV damage in the skin and slowing down collagen degradation. Zinc is crucial for superoxide dismutase syntheses (protects against oxidative stress). Studies show it boosts Collagen synthesis and therefore helps to delay the formation of wrinkles.

Key benefits

Delays formation of wrinkles

Boosts Collagen synthesis

Protects against oxidative stress

Repairs UV damage in skin

Maintains healthy, youthful skin

Manganese

3 mg

Manganese is also another essential mineral needed to build collagen and repair oxidative stress within the skin and body. Manganese strengthens immature collagen and influences its fibril size. The antioxidant effects of manganese have been shown to help prevent wrinkle formation and sagging skin.

Key benefits

Helps prevent wrinkles and sagging skin

Increases the fibril size in collagen

Strengths immature collagen

Repairs oxidative stress

Builds collagen

Copper

0.33 mg

Copper is a metallic element that is a vital component in skin health. Copper deficiency is responsible for premature ageing and loose skin. Copper benefits skin health by repairing and maintaining connective tissue. Most enzymes that are responsible for collagen synthesis absolutely depend on copper as a co-factor; no other mineral can replace its role in stimulating collagen production.

Key benefits

Stimulates collagen production

Repairs and maintains connective tissues
